Master-bath shower valve upgrade in Glen Rock
A real Glen Rock call — anti-scald valves aren't just nice-to-have, they're current code, and most older Glen Rock baths are running on 20+ year-old fixtures that don't have one.
The diagnosis — leaking + scalding risk
Customer's master shower had a 22-year-old Price Pfister single-handle that started dripping six months ago and got worse fast. Behind-wall inspection showed mineral buildup on the cartridge, but more importantly — no thermostatic mixing valve. NJ plumbing code now requires anti-scald protection on shower valves, and theirs was flagged on a recent home inspection. Two reasons to replace, not one.
The fix — Kohler Rite-Temp valve + tile patch
Cut a clean access panel through the back closet wall (faster and tile-saving vs. opening the shower wall). Removed the old valve assembly. Installed a Kohler Rite-Temp pressure-balanced thermostatic mixing valve with anti-scald set to 110°F max. Soldered the new copper supply connections, pressure-tested before re-tiling. Used the same tile pattern from her renovation tile box for a seamless patch.
The result — code compliant + water conservation
No more drip = roughly 700 gallons of wasted water per year saved. Anti-scald valve protects against the kids cranking the hot. Glen Rock building department signed off on the inspection same week. Total install: 4 hours plus the patch work, single visit.
