Sewer line replacement basement to street in Hackensack
A real Hackensack call — the kind of job nobody wants to need but a lot of older Hackensack homes will face within the next decade.
The diagnosis — collapsed cast iron, 18 feet out
Customer near Atlantic Street had been getting recurring backups every 3-4 months for two years — different plumbers kept cabling it clear. We ran the sewer camera in the cleanout and found the actual problem: the cast iron drain line had collapsed about 18 feet from the basement, partially blocked by soil intrusion through a crack. Cabling could never fix this — only replacement.
The fix — 30-foot trench dig + PVC replacement
Pulled the Hackensack street-opening permit (mandatory for any work in the public right-of-way). Coordinated with NJ One Call for utility marks before any digging. Excavated 30 feet from the foundation to the city tap with a mini-excavator, replaced the entire run with Schedule 40 PVC at proper 1/4-inch-per-foot pitch. New cleanout installed at the foundation wall. Restored landscaping and patched the sidewalk concrete to township spec.
The result — no more emergency calls
Three-day project: day 1 dig and disconnect, day 2 lay pipe and inspection, day 3 backfill and concrete restoration. Hackensack DPW inspector signed off on the slope and connection. Customer now has a 50-year warranty on the new line — and no more $300 cabling calls every quarter. Total: $9,800 for the full replacement, including permit, restoration, and inspection.
